Cooking with the giggling citrus

On Wednesday night Scott and I went with Matt and Jill to a course at Laughing Lemon, an English-language cooking school and caterer in Zurich. The course was entitled What’s In Season, and covered just that – fruits and vegetables that are at their tastiest right now.

We were welcomed with a glass of wine and some chit chat with our hosts, Jack (the chef) and Silvia (the wine guru). The small group of students consisted of a variety of nationalities, even including a couple of that most elusive species, the Swiss. The class itself was very informative, introducing us to a variety of veggies ranging from quotidian to exotic (monk’s beard, anyone?). After learning about and tasting everything from artichokes to blood oranges, we had a chance to do some hands-on cooking, followed by a sit-down dinner. (Check out my sexy husband buttering his strudel in the photo.) I even managed to score some great shopping tips from Jack on where to find certain ingredients in Zurich (finally, I can buy some semolina flour and make pasta!).

Classes at the Laughing Lemon are an amazing deal, especially for Zurich. For CHF 45 per person we not only received a couple hours of cooking instruction and tastings, but also a scrumptious 4-course dinner accompanied by lovely wines. Finding a good dinner alone for that price in this town is virtually impossible.

Laughing Lemon offers a few different cooking classes as well as some courses which revolve around wine tasting (which show off Silvia’s extensive wine knowledge). We’ve already signed up for future classes (which you can do via their website). Hooray for fun stuff to do in Zurich!

  1. You know, it’s a good thing you included a picture of your husband to prove that line about “buttering his strudel.” Because otherwise it sounds kind of dirty. 🙂

(“Yes, dear, I’m just going off now to butter my strudel.”)

    Forgive me. 🙂

  2. My husband and I have been to classes there a few times and thoroughly enjoyed them.
Glad to hear you had a good time.

  3. Ashley – we’re definitely in for the May ‘What’s in Season’, and I have my eye on a couple others, as well. Let’s chat!
