Moved

So, I finally got around to moving this blog from Blogger to WordPress. I still have a lot of tweaking to do, but the new site should be mostly functional at this point. Stay tuned for new posts, an updated blogroll, and other exciting new content. And please let me know if you notice anything that’s horribly broken. Danke!

  1. Congratulations, and thanks!

The two best features of WordPress over Blogger, in my humble opinion:

You can require approval for a reader’s first comment and after that let comments from that reader appear unmoderated (if you wish).
When reading your comments feed, the name of the post is included in the feed, so I have some context for comments right in the feed. Blogspot.com comment feeds are pretty useless in this regard.

Bonus item: more HTML is available to me as the commenter.

  2. Love the new theme. Do you really have over 500 subscribers? Impressive!

The subscribe to comments plugin would be a nice feature 🙂

  3. Hi Jul,

apologies, but this was only way I could see to make contact. There is a photo of some peatland you have taken in Sligo that I was hoping to use for a small college assignment (Abatement of Emissions from Peat Combustion!). Its not for publication or anything but still proper order is to ask your permission to use?

    Many thanks,

    Kind Regards

    David

  4. Hi Jul, are you self-hosted or on wordpress.com? I have been enjoying playing with the code to make a new “magazine format” on my front page, I love it! Though one must be code savvy for that. The new format here looks nice!

  5. @Cliff – I agree, comment features are vastly superior in WordPress.

@Andrea – I’ll add that to my list of plug-ins to check out. Thanks for the suggestion!

@Ian – It’s not so different from your theme, is it? I thought about switching to a light background, but I agree photos look so much better on the dark.

@Christine – thanks! I think we made it through with just a few pieces of scratched furniture.

@David – thanks for reminding me – I need to figure out a place to display my email address.

    @Dave – self-hosted at http://www.nearlyfreespeech.net

  6. Hi!

Just two technical things to ponder.

    1. I saw your link on FB, so I was able to figure out that my old google reader feed had broken with the move. I don’t know if you can do anything about this, but I used to link to http://www.zurika.com/feeds. Maybe you can post something in that directory telling people to update their link.

    2. I don’t think that this page is working correctly on Firefox on my mac. Unless it’s supposed to be all gray and not have a picture at the top anymore. I’m happy to send you a screenshot if you’d like to see what I’m talking about.

Good luck with the move. Can’t wait to read more!

  7. @Headbang – I do indeed hope it does.

@Christi – Thanks for the feedback! Alas, I seem to have lost a couple hundred subscribers in the move. I put up a post asking people to subscribe anew over at the old site, but I’m not sure what else I can do. Will keep looking for solutions. As for the appearance, I think you’re seeing it correctly (I too am in Firefox on a Mac – ahhh the joys of having quit finance). At the moment there is no picture in the header. I hope to get around to changing that soon. But if you think it still looks wonkier than it should, I’d definitely appreciate a screenshot.

  8. Some comment as Christi – only, I don’t seem to have received the “please move” note either. I’ll try to update my reader manually.

And congrats – it’s great looking site, and I’m with Headbang hoping it means more posts.
