Giveaway! Win a bag of goodies from the Faroe Islands

Scott and I were thrilled to win a trip to the Faroe Islands in conjunction with TBEX Copenhagen. Visit Faroe Island was so generous to us, and we want to share some of that generosity with readers of this blog. So we’ve assembled a goodie bag (two, actually – the second one is being given away at my art blog) full of fun stuff from the Faroes, including a piece of handmade relief art, a CD of local music, a DVD and photo book which show off the islands’ unique landscape and culture, some postcards, and a few other little treats.

I am intrigued by this Faroe Island goodie bag. How do I enter to win it?

You are in luck: there are four painless ways to enter.

1. Leave a comment on this post telling us about the best island you’ve ever visited.

2. Follow This non-American Life via Google Friend Connect or Networked Blogs. You’ll find boxes for both of those on the sidebar.

3. Blog about this Faroe Island giveaway, to help us spread the word. Post a link to your blog post in the comments so I’ll be sure to see it.

4. Tweet a link to this Faroe Island giveaway, to help us spread the word. Include @zurika somewhere in your tweet so I’ll be sure to see it. Here’s a short link to this post: http://j.mp/fnHSCo

Got that? Each person can enter up to four times (one for each of the numbered items above). I’ll choose a winner next week.

Stay tuned for posts about our adventures in the Faroe Islands.

  1. Wow, sounds like fun. I’ve really got to head north and check these islands out! Although, I have to say that Zanzibar is still my favorite of all.

  2. Fun! The nicest Island I have ever been to is Jamaica. We stayed in a little local village and it was so much fun (and sad) to see how the locals live there. That trip changed me as a traveler forever, for now I would much rather stay with the locals than in a very touristy place.

  3. By far, my favorite island is Guadeloupe – located in the lesser Antilles in the Caribbean. Some of the other islands in this group spend more on tourism (hello! Martinique!) – but the fact that it WASN’T overrun with tourists is exactly why we loved this gem of an island!

  4. For Fred’s 40th birthday we stayed at a luxury resort on Majorca. It was obscenely expensive, but so worth it! And now we get to say that we vacationed at a Medieval castle! (Fortunately, after massive renovations to include all the wonders of modern plumbing, heating & electricity.)

  5. I haven’t been to many islands but so far the best has been Oahu. The water was gorgeous, each side of of the island was so different than the other and it was a lot of fun.

  6. I can’t think of a single island I have been on. Does wanting to go to Australia count? ; )
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  7. The large majority of the trips I’ve taken with my husband have included traveling by boat to little islands. It’s become a running joke with us – no trip is complete without some form of water transport. That being said, I think the best island I’ve ever visited is Inishmore. We rented bicycles and spent the day touring around. Mainland Orkney comes a very close second.

  8. I’ve not been to many islands. There’s Alcatraz, but I don’t think I got off the boat. Manhattan is an island! And I do love Manhattan. I obviously need to go to more islands!

I tweeted, blogged you , and although I thought I already was a follower, (guess I wasn’t) I am now!

  9. The best group of islands I ever visited was the San Blas Islands off the coast of Panama. The local people, the Kuna Yala, are a wonderful example of an how an indigenous people continue to flourish and practice their age old customs surrounded by the modern world.

  10. Hello, I want to tell you I really enjoy your blogs. I will soone be moving to Germany (23rd) to join my wife and children who have been over since April. She is a German citizen who I have been married to for almost 11 years. She is living in a small village of Beesdau about 40 minutes outside of Berlin, along with my son 7 and daughter 14. She cam over before me to see if she would be able to find work (she is a dental hygentist) and to see if the chidren could adapt to the culture. She found work right away and the kids love it there. So now it is my turn to make the journey. I have vacationed in Germany several times with her and have always loved the beauty, and laid back lifestyle. Living there is another thing. Blogs like yours and a few others I have followed have really helped to prepare me and let me know what to expect once I am there. My two biggest fears is language barriers and finding work. I have two degress a bussiness management, and e-commerence degree, but do not know how much this will help in finding a job when I cannont speak German, any ideas? I would also love to find any expat groups in my area or in Berlin to socialize with would love to know if you have any ideas on locating them. It is refreshing to know there are many others like yourself that have come over in simular situations as mine and have not only made it but love living here. I know that no matter where you live there are going to be pros and cons and that alot of happiness is, what you make of your situation. Anyways thanks again for having a great blog, never stop writing.

  11. Anguilla BWI, twenty years ago, when there were only a couple of luxury hotels (easily avoided), and only one traffic light. A desert landscape surrounded by water, extraordinarily beautiful.

  12. My favorite island was Corfu in Greece. It’s where we honeymooned, so of course I’m biased! It’s the ‘green’ island and home to over 50 different kinds of orchids. The Durrell family also lived there once upon a time, so if you go, be sure to read “My Family and Other Animals”! And yes, greek food 24-7…DIE!

  13. My favorite island travels have been to Haiti and Amelia Island (off the coast of Georgia). I like being surrounded by water. 🙂 I love reading about your adventures!:)

  14. Hey, I like goodie bags! I’ve been to some pretty cool islands in my day, but my favorite, or at least the most obscure, was Stewart Island, the lesser-known third main island of New Zealand. We stayed in what some say is the southernmost hotel in the world (I think they might be wrong, but close), saw penguins and a real live kiwi (bird, not fruit), and caught some blue cod.

  15. Favorite island – hmm. I’ve been all through the Caribbean islands, Bermuda, Bahamas but my favorite is Peak’s Island (I think).

  16. Though I’ve yet to blog about my trip to Croatia, my favorite place in the world is the island of Vis there … soooo isolated, surrounded by an ocean with more shades of blue than I knew existed.

  17. My favourite island is a little one between Sweden and Finland called Åland… When I was a kid, my grandfather and I used to sail there each summer. It’s about 80km across the Baltic from where he lived at the time, just long enough to make the trip there in his boat a real adventure. I have some fabulous memories of the little summer house he had there… I really loved it there and those trips gave me my addiction to sailing.

  18. My favorite island was one of the islands in the Florida Keys. My husband and I went there as part of my 30th birthday/graduation from doctoral school celebration. We like to explore by geocaching around a new spot. One of the caches took us to an out-of-the way place with a broken down bridge. We had to wade through the ocean, climb the bridge, and cross part of the bay to a deserted island where the cache was hidden. It’s one of my favorite travel adventure memories (and the pictures are awesome)!

  19. Sicily is my favorite island. In addition to the stark beauty of the interior, our family history begins there. Grandparents and great grandparents used to mine there, before coming to America through Ellis Island. During a family Heritage trip there, we got to meet current day relatives, share a great lunch, renew wedding vows in the church. What fun, wonderful memories!!
