NYCTKTS 4

This post is basically just a couple tips for anyone who might be hoping to see some theater in New York City.

As in London, TKTS is our favorite way to get half-price tickets to excellent shows in NYC. On our most recent trip to New York we picked up some very good seats for Once there. Not everything is available – the most popular shows don’t need to release half-price tickets – but there are plenty of good plays and musicals that are.

The line at TKTS Times Square

The queue at the Times Square TKTS is sometimes manageable, and sometimes monstrous. The line at the South Street Seaport TKTS, on the other hand, is usually short to non-existent. We’re usually willing to go out of our way to go to this one (and usually try to combine it with an afternoon of bumming around lower Manhattan).

On days when the queue is long, you can usually save time by going through the ‘play only’ line if you’re willing to see a play rather than a musical. Read through the info on the TKTS website before you go – there are lots of helpful tidbits about opening times, and when you can purchase tickets for which performances (most are same-day only, except matinees). The website also tells you what shows are available now, so you can do research on the ones that are likely to be available when you go (the offerings are reasonably consistent from day to day).

Another way to score discount tickets is through same-day rush or lottery tickets. My lovely friend Adele pointed us to this page which lists how to do it at various shows. If you happen to be around Times Square when it’s lottery time, go toss your name in for Book of Mormon or Kinky Boots.

Have you seen any good shows recently?
