Scotland: soaking up the Isle of Skye

IsleOfSkye 2

Our road trip through the western Highlands ended with several relaxing days on the Isle of Skye.

The bridge to Skye

It was raining as we crossed the bridge to the island, but that didn’t stop the scenery from drawing us in from the start.

Our first stop was Portree, the main town on the island, for a look around the tourist information center and some quick grocery shopping. Portree has an adorable harbor, and a couple streets lined with cozy pubs and outdoor gear shops.

Essentials acquired, we drove onward to the self-catering accommodation we had booked in Edinbane (our flat was called Aber View, and we would highly recommend it).

Edinbane seemed to be more a small collection of buildings than a town; we were pleased to learn that two of the buildings contained adorable pubs. A seat by the peat fire with a pint of local ale at the Edinbane Inn quickly became one of our favorite evening spots.

Whenever we had a bit of sun, we headed out to explore the island, driving a different peninsula each day.

In our four and a half days on Skye, we managed to see most of it at a leisurely pace. The driving is similar to driving in the Highlands, with several windy one-lane roads, but not much traffic.

We ate most of our meals at our rental flat, which was a nice change of pace after a couple weeks of eating out in the Highlands (while we ate a lot of wonderful things on the road, we also started to get a little tired of pub food, which is by far the most common option around).

We also fit in several hikes, a distillery visit, and some sea kayaking while on Skye (which I keep typing as “Skype”). More to come!

  1. hi there,
not sure if you remember me. I moved to Edinburgh from Munich last October and came across your blog and have enjoyed beautiful photos you posted. this summer we drove to Highlands and really fell in love with the beauty of it , but we didn’t get to go to Skye though. Love your photos, they are beautiful 🙂
    Oom

    • Hi Oom! Glad you enjoyed the Highlands. We are lucky to live in such a beautiful country, aren’t we?

More Edinburgh travel blogger meet-ups are in the works for 2015 – I hope you’ll be able to make it to one.

  2. Beautiful photos. Makes me want to go back. We visited Scotland on holiday last year, including Skye, and are now living in Aberdeen – still pinching myself that we actually made the move from Johannesburg, South Africa – many changes and a long way away! Now that we are here will be planning another trip to Skye for sometime next year – maybe April or May 🙂

    • Congratulations on making the move! We also decided to move to Scotland after a brief visit here. There’s just something about this country.
