How long until the mall rats move in?

The long-awaited Sihlcity is finally open. The heralded new structure is large and contains retail shops, eateries, AND a cinema. All under one roof. How wacky is that? This article in SwissInfo gives us the inside scoop: Zurich’s tourist board has already hailed the complex as a unique entertainment concept and expects it to be … Read more

Seefeld doesn’t suck

I’m getting a little better about going out and enjoying this “beautiful” weather we’re having. If I just pretend it’s summer I can usually stand to leave the house without bitching and moaning to everyone I see about how much I love snow and WHERE DID WINTER GO? I have to admit it is fun … Read more

No Jacket Required

Now I understand what made Herr Liechtenstein take off his shirt – the $#%&ing; weather. Today we have crystal clear blue skies and temperatures in the 60s. Flowers are in bloom everywhere you look. All the windows in my apartment are open, and the heat is off. This would be a perfect day… if it … Read more

Cooking with the giggling citrus

On Wednesday night Scott and I went with Matt and Jill to a course at Laughing Lemon, an English-language cooking school and caterer in Zurich. The course was entitled What’s In Season, and covered just that – fruits and vegetables that are at their tastiest right now.

We were welcomed with a glass of wine and some chit chat with our hosts, Jack (the chef) and Silvia (the wine guru). The small group of students consisted of a variety of nationalities, even including a couple of that most elusive species, the Swiss.

I don’t actually know what Cru Sauvage means, but I’m imagining that it has something to do with the raw, wild, savage nature of … Read more

Es guets neus!

Despite the rain, last night we ventured out with the rest of Zurich to go see the New Year’s fireworks display over the lake. After dinner at home (restaurants in Zurich get even more expensive on New Year’s Eve, with set meals starting at around CHF 80, not including alcohol), we headed to the tram … Read more

Swiss Christmas Party, strike two

We went to a second Swiss Christmas party last week, thrown by my husband’s company. The owner of this company loves to force his employees to endure spring surprises on his employees, even though the Swiss ones (ie, everyone except my husband) seem to not be too fond of being surprised. I, on the other … Read more

Hunting winter down wherever you can find it

Today we dug our skates out of the closet and went ice skating at Oerlikon, one of Zurich’s three public outdoor rinks. It wasn’t quite as picturesque as skating on a frozen lake (as we were able to do last year in Pfäffikon), but hey, beggars can’t be choosers. At least it felt like winter.I … Read more
