Edinburgh: where to eat

We spent most of January in Edinburgh (I know, I’m a little behind on my blogging), so we got a chance to try quite a few of the city’s restaurants. That is, when I wasn’t busy using our apartment’s induction hob or sampling oddly-named desserts from Marks & Spencer. Here are the notable eateries, favorites first.

yummy food at David Bann

David Bann quickly became my favorite restaurant in the city, serving up creative, tasty vegetarian dishes in the Old Town. The menu changes seasonally, and is inspired by many different international cuisines.

Another favorite was The Dogs, a casual, friendly place with many yummy things on the menu. The lentil and nut roast was my favorite of the vegetarian dishes. (New Town)

La Garrigue restaurant in Edinburgh

French restaurants rarely make my favorites list, but La Garrigue was surprisingly impressive. I was quite pleased with the scallops with spinach and garlic, as well as the roquefort souffle. Scott was smitten with the squid sausage. (New Town)

One of the best places we found for a pint was the Guildford Arms, which we loved for its ornate interior as well as its tasty ales. The upstairs restaurant served pretty good food, as well. (And my dear friend Em appreciated the Früli on tap. It smells like liquid Pop Rocks.) (New Town)

Fishers in the City, as one would guess, is a fish restaurant, in the city (New Town, to be precise). We had an enjoyable dinner there one evening.

Tapa is a chain of tapas restaurants in Edinburgh which offers a delightful £10 lunch for two.

Speaking of chains, Costa Coffee is a rather generic chain all over the city, but the one on Princes Street is upstairs and has a really lovely view of the castle. It made for a nice place to sit and read or write postcards on a cold day. Quite nearby, Amicus Apple has free wifi and was a nice place to sit by the fire with a pint.

Do you have a favorite pub or restaurant in Edinburgh that we missed?

  1. Indeed, I was quite pleased with the variety of restaurants in Edinburgh. Haggis was definitely featured on plenty of menus, though. Can’t remember seeing the deep-fried Mars bars…

  2. Certainly looks like very yummy food. We have a few places here in Victoria that are either Vegan or Vegetarian friendly.. I eat that way at times, and sometimes all the way, but lately not so much…
