Am I the only one who is confused by this sign?

Not the part in Norwegian – I understood that perfectly, it says “age limit 24”. But the English part had me puzzled. Do I have to take my bra off to go in? I wondered. Do they have something against jock straps?

Is it common for bars to have such signs up, and I’ve just never noticed before?

  1. It’s quite common in the UK (or was back in the 80s and early 90s, anyway).

You won’t be allowed in with your favourite team’s colours on to stop fight between rival fans. Think Glasgow, for example. Rangers and Celtic football fans never played very nicely together so a lot of public places just stopped their patrons wearing team colours in an attempt to stop fighting.

  2. I was totally confused, too, until I read ms mac’s comment. Now, it totally makes sense. I love how Europeans word things…

  3. Ms Mac’s answer disappoints me because it is probably the truth.

I prefer your interpretation mainly because it’s the exact interpretation I would have had if I were confronted with that sign.

  4. Note to self: only wear black to pubs in the UK so as not to be mistaken for a supporter of some sort.

Adam – glad to hear I’m not the only one. 🙂

  5. I actually had the same interpretation as Ms. Mac, but never really imagined that being much of an issue in Norway (unless it’s related to something like skiing or biathlon). Despite the Viking heritage, it didn’t really feel like a breeding ground for hooliganism.

  6. If you only wear black, people might think you’re a New Zealand rugby fan.

Is the drinking age 24 in Norway? That seems cruel in a country subject to month-long nights.

  7. how fun! Wouldn’t it be a riot to have a bar that was truly No supporter Gear allowed???!!???

everyone flopping around – it would probably be packed with young men….

  8. Mark – crap, so what color am I supposed to wear?

Stephanie – too funny! Flop flop flop. Perhaps that’s the next great business idea?

TBF – Actually, I’m thinking my dirndl is probably the most supportive garment I own. It’s like support on crack.

  9. And I think the drinking age was 18/20 (beer/hard stuff), but I guess that doesn’t get you into the exclusive supporter-free clubs?
