Isle of Skye: the Old Man of Storr

The Isle of Skye is a wonderful place for hiking, if you’re lucky enough to have cooperative weather. We spent an afternoon exploring the Trotternish Peninsula, topped off with a hike up the Storr to visit its old man.

The beginning of the hike was not particularly inviting. The area had recently been clear-cut (apparently there was a lovely grove of evergreens here before), and the path was muddy and wet.

Things improved eventually, and the developing panorama encouraged us to keep going.

At the top we followed a path which took us around and through the rock formations, including the one known as the Old Man of Storr.

The views were definitely worth the trudge through the mud.

  1. Nice views! Your weather was better than ours. How were the bugs? In mid-July last year they were awfully persistant and they, plus the drippy skies hurried us away prematurely. 🙁

    • Oh yes, those would be midges. I hear they are awful in some parts of Scotland in the summer. Luckily we have managed to avoid them so far (mostly by not going to the Highlands June-August). This trip was in late September, so there weren’t any at all.
